The Census of Agriculture provides a detailed picture every five years of U.S. farms and ranches and the people who operate them. Conducted by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, the 2012 Census of Agriculture collected more than six million data items directly from farmers. The Ag Census Web Maps application makes this information available at the county level through a few clicks. The maps and accompanying data help users visualize, download, and analyze Census of Agriculture data in a geospatial context.

The dataset consists of estimates of erosion, sediment loss, soil organic carbon, nutrient loss, and pesticide loss from a statistically selected set of sample points within the Upper Mississippi River Basin. Results for the Baseline Conservation Condition are reported for the region as a whole and for each of the 14 subbasins within the region.

The USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) Cropland Data Layer (CDL) is an annual raster, geo-referenced, crop-specific land cover data layer produced using satellite imagery and extensive agricultural ground reference data. The program began in 1997 with limited coverage and in 2008 forward expanded coverage to the entire Continental United States. Please note that no farmer reported data are derivable from the Cropland Data Layer.

This site presents results of IWMI's first attempt to map global irrigated and rainfed croplands for the nominal year of 2000 using satellite images. The products include 10 km irrigated and rainfed cropland and a LULC map for the globe, 500 meter irrigated area map for South Asia, and 30 meter irrigated area maps for Syr Darya River Basin in Central Asia and Krishna River Basin in India. The maps contain various levels of information including irrigation water sources (surface, groundwater), cropping intensity (single, double, continuous) and dominant crop types.

Report on carbon sequestration in croplands addressing the background on the project, preliminary assessment and screening of sites (field sampling and laboratory analyses), impacts of land-use on soil carbon, crop residue management influences on soil, crop residue removal for bioenergy, rotational tillage, grazing, soild erosion and quality, modeling the impacts of sequestration, and future research.

Energy flows through nature into social systems as life support. Human societies depended on renewable, solar powered energy for fuel, shelter, tools, and other items for most of our history. Today, when we flip on a light switch, turn an ignition or a water faucet, or eat a hamburger, we engage complex energy extraction systems that largely rely on non-renewable energy to power our lives. About 90% of Vermont's total energy consumption is currently generated from non-renewable energy sources. This dependency puts Vermont at considerable risk, as the peaking of world oil production, global financial instability, climate change, and other factors impact the state.
