Central Eastern United States - Seismic Source Characterization for Nuclear Facilities

The purpose of compiling the CEUS-SSC Project database was to organize and store those data and resources that had been carefully and thoroughly collected and described for the TI Team’s use in characterizing potential seismic sources in the CEUS. An important goal for the development of this database was to document sources and dates for all information that was initially assessed for the CEUS-SSC Project, specifying exactly what data and resources were considered, and provide for pertinent future data sets to be incorporated as they were generated for the project. Development of the project database began at the inception of the project to provide TI Team members with a common set of data, maps, and figures for characterization of potential seismic sources. The database was continually updated during the course of the project through the addition of new references and data collected by TI Team members and project subcontractors, including information presented in project workshops and provided through PPRP review documentation. This appendix presents the contents of the project database, as well as information on the workflow, development roles, database design considerations, data assessment tasks, and management of the database. Based on the CEUS Project Plan, the project database included, but was not limited to, the following general types of data: Magnetic anomaly Gravity anomaly Crystalline basement geology Tectonic features and tectonic/crustal domains Tectonic stress field Thickness of sediments Crustal thickness VP at top of crystalline basement Seismic reflection data at Charleston, South Carolina Earthquake catalog Quaternary faulting and potential Quaternary features Mesozoic rift basins Paleoliquefaction sites Topography and bathymetry Liquefaction dates from published literature for the Wabash, New Madrid, and Charleston seismic zones Index map showing locations of published crustal scale seismic profiles and geologic cross sections

Geologic HazardsSource

This map depicts three distinct types of Geologic Hazards. Earthquake Hazards shows the two most likely earthquake scenarios for our area -- Cascadia Subduction Zone M9.0 and Portland Hills Fault M6.8 earthquakes, Perceived Shaking and Damage Potential, from DOGAMI OFR-18-02. Steep Slopes are polygons representing slopes greater than or equal to 20% in the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services topographic watershed boundary area. Derived from 2014, reclassified, 1' resolution LiDAR bare-earth digital elevation model (DEM). All slopes average over a horizontal distance of 15'. Minimum area of contiguous slope is approximately 1/2 acre. Polygons were created, generalized and smoothed in ArcGIS 10.3.1 and ArcGIS Pro. DOGAMI Landslide Inventory consists of polygons delineating landslide deposits (including debris flow fans and talus extent), from DOGAMI IMS-57.

Seismic Analysis of Spatio-Temporal Fracture Generation During EGS Resource Development - Deviatoric MT, Fracture Network, and Final ReportSource

This submission contains 167 deviatoric moment tensor (MT) solutions for the seismicity observed two years prior and three years post start of injection activities at The Geysers Prati 32 EGS Demonstration. Also included is a statistical representation of the properties of 751 fractures derived from the analysis of seismicity observed two years prior and three years post start of injection activities at The Geysers Prati 32 EGS Demonstration Project. The locations of the fractures are taken from microseismic hypocenters, the fracture areas are derived from moment magnitudes via scaling relationships, and the azimuths (sigma 1) and dips (sigma 3) are derived from the results of stress analyses.

ThinkHazard!

ThinkHazard! provides a general view of the hazards, for a given location, that should be considered in project design and implementation to promote disaster and climate resilience. The tool highlights the likelihood of different natural hazards affecting project areas (very low, low, medium and high), provides guidance on how to reduce the impact of these hazards, and where to find more information. The hazard levels provided are based on published hazard data, provided by a range of private, academic and public organizations. Users and potential partners can contact ThinkHazard! administrators with queries or information to add to the tool, at the ThinkHazard! feedback form. This form is available on every page of the website.

Utah FORGE Induced Seismicity Mitigation PlanSource

This is the current induced seismicity mitigation plan (ISMP) for the Utah FORGE project. Information that was collected during Phases 1 and 2 of the Utah FORGE project has been incorporated, as have literature searches and risk assessments. The purpose of this report is to identify and mitigate induced seismicity for the Utah FORGE Project. Mitigation includes preliminary screening, outreach, criteria for ground vibration and noise, data collection practices, and natural seismic hazard analysis. From this, the overall risk from the project was determined. This report is subject to change as new information comes to light.

Utah FORGE: Site Earthquake AnimationSource

This is a .kml earthquake animation covering the period of 1991 - 2011 for the Utah Milford FORGE site. It displays seismic events using different sized bubbles according to magnitude. It covers the general Utah FORGE area (large shaded rectangle) with the final site displayed as a smaller polygon along the northwestern margin. Earthquakes are subdivided into clusters and the time, date, and magnitude of each event is included. Nearby seismic stations are symbolized with triangles. This was created by the University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS).

West Flank Coso FORGE: Refined Earthquake Focal Mechanism Catalog for Southern California (1981-2010)Source

A refined earthquake mechanism catalog for southern Califiornia using the HASH method and locations derived from waveform cross-correlation. Each focal mechanism is obtained from grid searching for the best-fitting double-couple focal mechanism solution to both the P-wave first motion polarity records that were picked by network analysts, and the S/P amplitude ratios computed from three-component seismograms. This dataset includes around 179,000 focal mechanisms for earthquakes occurring 1981 through 2010 in southern California region. Updated datasets (through 9/30/2016) are included at the bottom of the linked page.
