Approximation of continuity of lenticular Mesaverde sandstone lenses

Mesaverde Group sandstone units in 13 closely-spaced wells in the central and southern Piceance Basin of Colorado were correlated utilizing wireline log response quantitatively and qualitatively. Based on these correlations, the environmental subdivisions of the Mesaverde Group were characterized as follows. Paralic (upper mixed-marine) zone, occurring in the uppermost Mesaverde, includes thick sandstone units which are interpreted to be regionally continuous. Fluvial zone, containing point-bars 20 to 30+ ft thick, is interpreted to be correlatable to a maximum of 6800 ft. Paludal zone, which has insufficient data to adequately characterize the sand units. However, 63 percent of the units are correlatable across at least 139 ft. An approximation of the dimensional characteristics of Mesaverde sandstone units has potential applications in designing hydraulic fracturing treatments and estimating gas reserves more accurately. 16 figures, 2 tables

Castlegate Sandstone True Triaxial Test DataSource

Data set containing results from constant mean stress - constant Lode angle true triaxial compression tests performed on Castlegate Sandstone. From the test preformed, the bedding plane and the strain type inside the band of sedimentary rocks can be related to stress histories. The goal of these tests are to understand the conditions that lead to localized deformation in porous sandstone which has geotechnical applications such as oil and natural gas production, carbon dioxide sequestration, and hazardous waste storage.

Confined Brazilian Tests for Rock Failure Envelope and BehaviorSource

Includes test data from Confined Brazilian Tests. The tests were aim at investigating the rock failure envelope of four different lithologies including Indiana limestone, Scioto sandstone, Grey Berea sandstone, and Tennessee sandstone. Tables include the strength data obtained using load and damage controlled Brazilian tests on the six lithologies. Confine Brazilian tests are preformed by wrapping a sample in a copper jacket so that the confining fluid does not directly interact with the sample. Then a constant confining pressure is applied to the fluid to create a state of triaxial stress in the disc such that the disc center is under three nonzero and unequal principal stress components. By increasing the confining pressure, the least principal stress changes from tensile to compressive so that rock failure can be investigated over a wide range of stress conditions.

The objective of this project is to develop a comprehensive, interdisciplinary, and quantitative characterization of a fluvial-deltaic reservoir which will allow realistic inter-well and reservoir-scale modeling to be constructed for improved oil-field development in similar reservoirs world-wide. The geological and petrophysical properties of the Cretaceous Ferron Sandstone in east-central Utah will be quantitatively determined. Both new and existing data will be integrated into a three-dimensional representation of spatial variations in porosity, storativity, and tensorial rock permeability at a scale appropriate for inter-well to regional-scale reservoir simulation. Results could improve a reservoir management through proper infill and extension drilling strategies, reduction of economic risks, increased recovery from existing oil fields, and more reliable reserve calculations. Transfer of the project results to the petroleum industry is an integral component of the project.

FutureGen2 Petrel Project

This Petrel project features geomechanical models that takes advantage of existing modeling work from PNNL and expands upon its framework to included overlying and underlying geologic zones. Where available, geomechanical logs were incorporated into these models. While the existing CO2 storage interval and caprock (Mt. Simon Ss and Eau Claire Shale) were finely layered by PNNL, the overlying layers were more coarsely layered to limit cell count.

Reservoir heterogeneity in carboniferous sandstone of the Black Warrior basin. Final report

Although oil production in the Black Warrior basin of Alabama is declining, additional oil may be produced through improved recovery strategies, such as waterflooding, chemical injection, strategic well placement, and infill drilling. High-quality characterization of reservoirs in the Black Warrior basin is necessary to utilize advanced technology to recover additional oil and to avoid premature abandonment of fields. This report documents controls on the distribution and producibility of oil from heterogeneous Carboniferous reservoirs in the Black Warrior basin of Alabama. The first part of the report summarizes the structural and depositional evolution of the Black Warrior basin and establishes the geochemical characteristics of hydrocarbon source rocks and oil in the basin. This second part characterizes facies heterogeneity and petrologic and petrophysical properties of Carter and Millerella sandstone reservoirs. This is followed by a summary of oil production in the Black Warrior basin and an evaluation of seven improved-recovery projects in Alabama. In the final part, controls on the producibility of oil from sandstone reservoirs are discussed in terms of a scale-dependent heterogeneity classification.

TASK 2 REPORT EXTRACTING STRESS DATA FROM SEISMIC DATA: A Non-Invasive Approach for Elucidating the Spatial Distribution of In Situ Stress in Deep Subsurface Geologic Formations Considered for CO2 Storage

This report describes research accomplishments achieved with funding provided through Department of Energy (DOE) Contract DE-FE0031686. The purpose of this DOE funding is to develop methods that can provide key information about stress fields that act on deep rocks without invading the earth to acquire that information. The research objective was to demonstrate methods that extract the azimuth directions of SHmax and SHmin stress in deep rocks from traditional seismic reflection data like the data that are used to explore for deep oil and gas reservoirs. Battelle performed two seismic investigations and achieved estimates of SHmax and SHmin azimuths in both efforts that agreed with local, non-seismic, ground-truth measurements of SHmax orientation. The first procedure utilized vertical seismic profiling (VSP) data; the second effort utilized three-dimensional (3D) seismic data.
