Elephant Butte Irrigation District Groundwater Monitoring Wells

Interstate Stream Commission nested piezometer wells in the Elephant Butte Irrigation District. Nested piezometer wells include three individual deep, intermediate, and shallow depth piezometers. Piezometers differ from monitoring wells in that piezometers have a perforated/screened section at the bottom of the well, while a monitoring well is perforated/screened along the length where the water table intersects the well. 
"Nested" piezometers have several individual piezometer wells with their screened intervals at different depths in an aquifer at the same location. Differences between water levels inside the piezometers indicate pressure gradients and thus the vertical flow component of the aquifer. For example, if the water level inside of the deepest piezometer is higher than the water levels inside the shallower piezometers, it indicates a higher pressure with depth, and thus upward vertical movement of water as water flows from higher to lower pressures (assuming unconfined aquifer conditions).
