These data are based on records supplied to KGS by private coal or land companies, as well as other state and federal agencies. The format for rock descriptions includes the driller's or geologist's English description (in some cases, alpha-numeric codes were used) and an equivalent numeric rock code. A list of these codes and their standard English equivalents is available. Numeric rock codes are based on the system described in core logging manuals by Ferm and Weisenfluh (1981) and Ferm and Smith (1981). Copies of these photographic guides can be obtained from the KGS Public Information Center at the University of Kentucky by calling 859-257-5500, x124 or toll free 877-778-7827. Borehole records may contain coal bed correlations determined by KGS geologists. A list of coal bed abbreviations for the Eastern and Western Kentucky coal fields is also available. Users should use independent means of verifying these interpretations. KY Coal Exploration Drill Holes

This database contains data collected by KGS during field projects or compiled from reports prepared by other companies or agencies. The data in eastern Kentucky were primarily collected from roadcuts, natural outcrops, and coal mines and consist of single-point measurements of coal thickness. Some data in eastern Kentucky have been summarized from borehole records. The data in western Kentucky were primarily obtained from borehole records due to the lack of surface exposures. Therefore, duplicate information exists for western Kentucky data in the thickness database and the borehole database. Thickness records are downloadable and include county, quadrangle, coal bed name, total coal thickness (coal only, inches), total parting thickness (if measured, inches), elevation (feet--relative to sea level), coal modifier (if available), exposure type, and location in coordinates (in UTM, State Plane, and Latitude/Longitude). Coal elevations reference the base of the seam and most were determined by altimeter. Coal bed names were assigned by field personnel during mapping; however, the user should use independent means to verify these results. Kentucky Groundwater Monitoring Wells

This map service allows users to build a thematic chloropleth map of Kentucky or a selected area within the state from a selection of 545 groundwater quality analytes in 15 categories. Most of these data were contributed by the Kentucky Division of Water Groundwater Section of the Watershed Management Branch (DOW) and date back to the 1930's. Current data on this map service is available through 2010.

The University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Geological Survey have worked together to collect the oil and gas well locations in Kentucky into GIS-readable shapefile downloads.

This dataset represents the population and housing unit density within individual, local NHDPlusV2 catchments and upstream, contributing watersheds riparian buffers based on 2010 US Census data. Densities are calculated for every block group and watershed averages are calculated for every local NHDPlusV2 catchment(see Data Sources for links to NHDPlusV2 data and Census Data). This data set is derived from The TIGER/Line Files and related database (.dbf) files for the conterminous USA. It was downloaded as Block Group-Level Census 2010 SF1 Data in File Geodatabase Format (ArcGIS version 10.0). The landscape raster (LR) was produced based on the data compiled from the questions asked of all people and about every housing unit. The (block-group population / block group area) and (block-group housing units / block group area) were summarized by local catchment and by watershed to produce local catchment-level and watershed-level metrics as a continuous data type.

From the site: "A cells polygon feature class was created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to illustrate the degree of exploration, type of production, and distribution of production in the State of Kentucky. Each cell represents a quarter-mile square of the land surface, and the cells are coded to represent whether the wells included within the cell are predominantly oil-producing, gas-producing, both oil and gas-producing, or the type of production of the wells located within the cell is unknown or dry. Data were retrieved from the Kentucky Oil and Gas Well Records database and saved as a shapefile of oil and gas well locations for Kentucky. Cells were developed as a graphic solution to overcome the problem of displaying proprietary well data. No proprietary data are displayed or included in the cell maps. The data are current as of 2005."
