These data are based on records supplied to KGS by private coal or land companies, as well as other state and federal agencies. The format for rock descriptions includes the driller's or geologist's English description (in some cases, alpha-numeric codes were used) and an equivalent numeric rock code. A list of these codes and their standard English equivalents is available. Numeric rock codes are based on the system described in core logging manuals by Ferm and Weisenfluh (1981) and Ferm and Smith (1981). Borehole records may contain coal bed correlations determined by KGS geologists. A list of coal bed abbreviations for the Eastern and Western Kentucky coal fields is also available. Users should use independent means of verifying these interpretations.
